information on the Reading Response Jounals that I use in my classroom
each year. Each year I pick a student that had the best journal entries
for the year and their journal is used for the example. The journal you
see belonged to Maddie from my 2007-2008 4th grade class.

novels that I use for Guided Reading.

My students have
Independent Reading Activities that
they complete when they are not meeting with me for Guided Reading.

I use the Four Blocks Balanced
Literacy Model & Houghton Mifflin to teach reading.
&

I use the
Four Blocks for Upper
Grades as well as Houghton-Mifflin to teach about words. The Four Blocks
are:
Working With Words,
SSR (Self-Selected
Reading),
Guided
Reading,
and
Writing.
In the Working With Words block we will
look at how to create various words. I will also be teaching grammar and editing skills.
Word Study is another name for this block.
Each day we will do approximately
50 minutes for guided reading, 20 miuntes for Working With Words
(Spelling, Phonics and Grammar), and 40 minutes for Writing. I believe strongly in reading aloud each day for
20 minutes and doing a "Book Chat" with the class to share different
authors and books in the classroom library.
